Overall fairly perfect boating, right at a difficulty level challenging enough to make me think and work, but easy enough to feel comfortable and fun. Did reveal some gaps in my planning and gear. More like this.
Notes for next time:
- Remember to check gauges before going! That could have been dangerous, e.g. this morning after a night of rain flow is well above recommended.
- Need to figure out navigation. With wet hands the phone isn’t operable. Maybe a waterproof notebook with distances + the watch for monitoring distances? Could play double duty for canyon beta.
- Need to figure out better ways of attaching gear in the cockpit. Had a bag and water bottle kicking around, would have been lost if I swamped.
- Wanted to try swamp drills but with the gear rattling around seemed ill-advised. Need to do this some time soon, but where gear etc is nice and locked down/waterproofed. Including phone.
- Run was faster than I expected, 30 min bike + 1.5 on the water (plus some transition time). Could fit the full Mill City -> Stayton run in a day easy.
- BIking as shuttle:
- Worked well, safe enough riding route.
- Lots of gear, somewhat hard to attach to the bike efficiently. Panniers would be a better choice.
- Plenty warm. In fact needed to remove fleece and just have thin undershirt, I was too warm.
